The McGrew family descended from the Scottish Clan Macgregor which was a strong and distinct clan in the Scottish Highlands as early as 1296. Records vary but it is thought the family McGrew moved from Scotland to Ireland when they refused to join the Clan Macgregor to fight against the Scottish King. Leaving Scotland McGrew’s settled in County Tyrone, Ireland.
After a generation or two the McGrew Scots, emigrated from Ireland to new world. From McGrew family records, we know that Robert and Isabella McGrew 6th Great Grandparents to Harold, Susie, Tracy, Bobby & and their McGrew 1st cousins, came to America from County Tyrone Ireland around 1727. Written Records note that Great Grandfather Robert had held on to his Scottish Pride because when he arrived in America, he was remembering his Scottish heritage by wearing a Blue Scotch bonnet called a "Glengarry Cap".
After arriving in the colonies, they settled about 20 miles north of Gettysburg, PA.
This is the McGrew House in County Tyrone where Robert and his probable father or brother, William McGrew lived prior to Robert's emigration to PA. The house was demolished in the 1970s. Original photo in possession of William McGrew of Omagh in 2000.
The new colonies provided them freedom of religion. Records vary and it is not known if the early Irish McGrew Family, were Episcopalian or Quaker, but as the McGrew sons chose Quaker wife’s the family soon became committed Irish Quakers
