James Langston "Lank" Hughey carried the mail from Lowry to Omaha in 1914. He carried out someone's unexpired time then he bid in the next term for $1.15 a trip until 1918. In 1923 Dave Dunlap got the government to open a route from Lowry To Lead Hill by promising he could get a carrier for $30.00 a month, 2 days a week. Wednesday and Saturday. Lank took the job and carried the mail down Carrollton Hollow and back up to Lead Mine Hollow until 1938, then the government stopped the route. Lead Hill -The first school at Lead Hill was in 1849. In 1889, a frame building was built and Lead Hill became one of the first schools in the county to offer high school. The School pictured above was built about 1924 a rock building was built and five teachers were hired. Carrollton Hollow, Sun Set, Cedar Grove, Vinington, Do Better (Oak Grove), Chaney, Mauldin and parts of Seals were eventually consolidated with Lead Hill. Additionally Locust and Monarch Schools just over the line in Marion County were consolidated with Lead Hill.
Joy Risley Tilton writes DINNER ON THE GROUND a Southern tradition from my childhood! When I was a little girl in the 1950’s, we would make the trip to the small community of Peel, Arkansas on Memorial Day weekend to attend church service, decorate graves and partake in the noon meal. Hard to explain to our kids what it felt like. But the feeling of family was as delicious as the food.
This photo was in Mom’s pictures which were with Grandma’s pictures. Not sure which Lead Hill area church this was, I’m guessing picture was from late 60’s or early 70’s.
